Launch of the Federation of Small Business national shop local campaign

Angela Smith FSB opened the proceedings

followed by yours truly who said:-

We are pleased the Federation of Small Business has launched their national Keep Trade Local Campaign in Droitwich Spa and that so many shops are participating in the scheme.  My background is in retail and I am very aware that vibrant town centres are important, not only for local residents but visitors to the area as well.  The past few months have been a difficult time for retailers, resulting in the loss of familiar names as well independent shops.  At Wychavon District Council we are committed to helping local businesses through initiatives such as events like todays, promoting the District to visitors and a grant scheme for new shops opening in empty premises.

This is why we are working withorganisations like the Federation of Small Business and for DroitwichSpa to promote ‘Shop Local’.  There are many reasons to support local shops.  A range of shops, both the well-known chains and the independents, make our town centres distinctive.  Shopping locally helps the environment – a journey into the local town centre, either by car, public transport or on foot is shorter than travelling miles to a large city centre or out of town shopping centre.  Shopping locally directly helps business and jobs.  Did you know that in the town centre here there are over 140 businesses employing hundreds of people.

Every pound you spend helps keep people in employment.  Supporting local shops means there is a good range of products and services for everyone – both the local community and visitors.

I am pleased today to launch the new ‘Discover Droitwich Spa’ shopping bag.  This bag is the result of the Shop Local project led by Droitwich Spa Area Partnership.  The bag not only helps promote the town and benefits the environment, but also will hopefully act as a reminder to ‘shop local’.  This bag would not have been possible without the support from other partners.  Therefore on behalf of Wychavon District Council and Droitwich Spa Area Partnership I would like to thank this shopping centre, St. Andrews Square, the Federation of Small Business and For Droitwich Spa for their contribution.  These bags are being offered free to shoppers.  Today you can pick up you free bag from the event information stalls and in the High Street.  Alternatively you can get a free bag by spending £10 or more in one of the participating shops, which display these posters.  In each bag you will find information on shopping locally, the summer events programme and a handy shopping pad.

I would like to thank you for your time, hope you enjoy the rest of the event and don’t forget – Shop Local !

and some pictures with Wendy
